AND later -- She says WOMEN deserve a chance to lead. We'll hear from Carol Moseley Braun, the only woman taking on a field of men in the quadrennial quest for the Presidency.

But, first. They got him --but, what Next. Options are being discussed about bringing former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein to justice. A war crimes trial perhaps. Those who suffered under his brutal regime -- say there should be no justice for this evil dictator. His violent regime -- silenced countless Iraqi's, and left others like the Wali family of Manchester to run for their lives.
Celene Ramadan spoke with the Wali's about their homeland and the post Saddam era.

Newal:
36:07 We sleeping 3 in the morning and we got a call from my brother and he say "did you hear the news? They caught Saddam!"
FOR THE WALI FAMILY, THE CAPTURE OF SADDAM HUSSEIN IS LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE.
Newal: We feel so, so happy. Like this all dream, like Kurdish people's dream. And all Iraqi people's dream.
Ahmed:
My father and my grandfather said finally - 30 years. 30 years we wait for him to get caught. That's a long time to wait. Like, three decades. Finally it happen.
SADDAM HUSSEIN'S REGIME HAD TARGETED THE WALI FAMILY FORCING THEM TO FLEE FROM IRAQ TO STAY ALIVE. THEY HAVE NOW BEEN LIVING IN AMERICA FOR 6 YEARS. BUT THE MEMORIES OF LIFE IN SADDAM'S COUNTRY ARE STILL VIVID.
Newal - I can say he was evil. Something so bad for the Iraqi people because he doesn't leave any house without killing someone inside that house.
Newal:
They just pull you from the house even middle of the morning and they shoot you directly. They don't care about - like they treat the human like animal.
Newal:
47:43 - We used to travel for example, from Erbel to Kirkuk go visit my family it's almost just 45 minutes - do you believe it takes 7hours because every 15 minutes there's one of Saddam's checkpoints. If you pay him under the table they can take you a little easier.
Ahmed:
Also like he didn't want anybody to be bigger than him. He had to be the biggest thing in Iraq. In the streets you see all statues of him pictures of him. You don't see any of the Iraqi history the past Iraqi the babylon that were there - you don't see any of that. All you see is Saddam. Everything about him.
ON A KURDISH TELEVISION STATION, THE WALIS WATCH FOOTAGE OF THE AFTERMATH OF THE ATROCITIES COMMITTED BY SADDAM. DEAD BABIES AND CHILDREN LINE THE STREETS IN THE TOWN OF HALABJAH.
Ahmed - There's so many things that he has done that the world hasn't even seen. They show movies they have footages of what Saddam did to the Kurds - you don't see that in the CNN and the NBC and the media. They don't show that. They should show that.
ALSO ON TV - PICTURES OF THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ CELEBRATING THEIR NEWFOUND FREEDOM.
Newal:
People in the street were dancing and singing big celebration. We get call from everybody. Congratulation! We wait for that moment and it finally came. They give candy to all the people nobody go to work, no school, no work no nothing. Now it's holiday -
A national holiday 14, 15, 16.
HERE IN THE UNITED STATES, WE SEE IMAGES ON THE NEWS OF SADDAM SUPPORTERS DEMOSTRATING IN THE STREETS. I ASK THE WALI FAMILY WHO SADDAM'S SUPPORTERS ARE.
Newal -
I can say that people like Saddam he make for people like brainwash. They grow up with Saddam in school everywhere is Saddam. Saddam all the time. When they grow up it's too hard for them to accept because they grew up with it.
Ahmed - 19:31:29
They not doing it for the love of Saddam Hussein they doing it for the love of the money. These are the people that were getting all the money from all the oil exports you know these were the only people who were getting money. Saddam would take from all the people just to give to this small group.
Newal:
He keeps his group, his people with the money. He pays the armys more money than anyone. He spends all his money on his group and that's how he stay alive for 35 years. if not, then he not be alive for one minute.
THE FAMILY AGREES THAT SADDAM HUSSEIN SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE BY THE IRAQI PEOPLE.
Ahmed:
The world doesn't know the whole story. The people of Iraq know what he did. How is cruelty was. He should put in justice in Iraq.
RECONSTRUCTION OF IRAQ WILL NO DOUBT BE A LONG PROCESS. THE WALI FAMILY WANTS TO GO BACK AND VISIT THEIR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
We are safer - before we couldn't even talk to our family on the phone. Saddam would find out we try to call them and maybe kill them all.
I hope to see my family because I miss them. I have been here for almost 6 years we've just this year after they remove him from the power we can call and talk to them finally - but I want to see them. All family and all relative. United States did a good job. And I take my children - my little one doesn't remember my grandmother and father - he doesn't know what they look like.
Mo - America is going to try to make Iraq look like America now They're going to be building bridges, better things now.
Good school good college.
That's a good thing?
Ahmed -
It's a very good thing. That's what people need. They need a democracy so they can see how to live life in a good way. 41:00 - in school there was 2, 3 people to a book. There was no education. Here, I see all the education and I'm taking advantage of it. I'm getting good grades and I want to go to college.
Mo - I just want to say thank you Mr. President George W. Bush and thank you to the Us military because they made the Iraqi people free.
Ahmed - and God bless the Iraqi people for staying there for 30 years
Newal - 35!
Ahmed - 35 years! Too long. You can't even count all those years. This is the end and now it's a whole new chapter for them.
FOR NH OUTLOOK, I'M CELENE RAMADAN.

Return to index of stories...
The political breakfast series "Politics 'n Eggs" is well-known for giving political candidates - especially presidential candidates - a chance to meet NH business leaders. But the featured guest earlier this month was not a politician. Rather, it was someone known for covering politics. Mark Halperin, the political director for ABC News, is now covering his fourth NH Primary. Here are some excerpts from his comments on the upcoming Primary and Howard Dean's front runner status.
script iconIntro Braun
Return to index of stories...
New Hampshire Outlook and the Center for Public Responsibility and Corporate Citizenship have teamed-up for a special series of interviews with the candidates.
This time Democrat Carol Moseley Braun is in the spotlight. She's the only black woman to serve in the U-S Senate and was later tapped as Ambassador to New Zealand by President Clinton.
NH Business Review’s Jeff Feingold sat down with Braun to get her views on ethics in the business world.

Despite low poll numbers -- Carol Moseley Braun continues to forge ahead with her bid for the Presidency in an otherwise all-male contest for the White House.
